Pope Francis has recognized the martyrdom of a murdered Italian anti-mafia judge and thus paved the way for his beatification, the Vatican said on Tuesday.

Rosario Livatino was born on 21. September 1990, a few weeks before he turned 38. Birthday, shot by members of the Stidda, the Mafia organization from Agrigento, Sicily.

After the Pope’s decision, Livatino is expected to be beatified in a mass in the coming months.

The late judge was a deeply religious man, according to Archbishop Vincenzo Bertolone, the Catholic priest who promotes Livatino’s cause of holiness at the Vatican.

« He always had the Constitution, the legal provisions and the Gospel on his desk, » Bertolone told Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, in September.

Pope John Paul II. met Livatino’s parents in 1993, shortly before a seminal anti-mafia speech in Agrigento, and greeted the judge as “a martyr of justice and, indirectly, of the faith. ”

Livatino is the second high profile victim of the Sicilian Mafia to be beatified. The first was Father Pino Puglisi in 2013, who was killed by gangsters in Palermo 10 years earlier.

In Italy, the Catholic Church has historically been accused of not seeing the Mafia. However, since the early 1990s it has been increasingly loudly condemned.
