The Coast Guard searched overnight for four crew members who were aboard a Portland fishing boat that sank off the Massachusetts coast early Monday.

The Coast Guard cutter, Vigorous, based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, spent the night searching for the crew of the 82-foot Emmy Rose and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry fixed-wing aircraft based in The Cape Cod Coast Guard Fly over the search area on the first bright Tuesday, Coast Guard spokeswoman Amanda Wyrick said Monday evening.

The Coast Guard hadn’t released the names of the ship’s captain, crew, and boat owner by Monday evening, but the daughter of one of the crew members told News Center Maine (WCSH / WLBZ) that she would not give up hope.

« I just know if he’s out there. He won’t give up, ”Reyann Matthews said of her father, Jeff Matthews.

Reyann Matthews and her cousin Dana Matthews were both emotional when they met with family members and friends at Portland Fish Pier on Monday afternoon.

« I just fell to the ground. I didn’t want to believe it, ”Reyann Matthews said of the news of the Emmy Rose’s demise.

She said the last time she heard the crew welded on the boat while it was taking in water.

The searchers found only debris and an empty liferaft on Monday morning after responding to the ship’s emergency position, which indicated a radio beacon. Known as EPIRB, the device is automatically activated and sends out a signal when it comes into contact with water.

Sergeant Ryan Noel told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that the crew had not made any Mayday or emergency calls.

Maine fishing families « hope for the best and fear the worst » while waiting for news of the missing crew, said Ben Martens, executive director of the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association.

« For all fishermen working on the water and their families, stress and anxiety is on the roof right now, » Martens said. « It’s a whole community that feels stress, fear, fear and hope at the same time. ”

The Emmy Rose sank about 22 miles northeast of Provincetown, Massachusetts, the Coast Guard said. The Boston First District Coast Guard Command Center received a notification from the Emmy Rose EPIRB at 1:00 p.m.. m. Monday.

Coast Guard crews discovered debris and an empty liferaft in the area of the ship’s last known position. There were 30 knot winds and seas of 6 to 8 feet in the area Monday morning.

The ship owner reported that there were four people on board and there were no replies to the boat’s satellite phone, the Coast Guard said.

After the emergency notification was received, the Coast Guard launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and cutter Vigorous to search for the Emmy Rose.

The search on Monday morning was expanded to include two knives, airplanes and a motorboat, the Coast Guard said.

The captain and crew are all seasoned fishermen who have worked on the Emmy Rose and other local boats, said Alan Tracy, president of Vessel Services, a supplier to the Portland fishing industry.

« This boat has been an integral part of our fishing community here on the Portland coast, » he said. “The crew, the captain and the owner are known to us and everyone at Portland Fish Pier. ”

Tracy said the crew loaded the bottom fishing vessel with ice from Vessel Services on Wednesday and left Portland either that day or Thursday. Other captains fishing in the area saw her this weekend and the Emmy Rose is believed to have gone to Gloucester, Massachusetts to land fish, he said.

Bert Jongerden, general manager of the Portland Fish Exchange, said Monday was a sad day by the waterfront in Portland with people waiting for news about the crew of the Emmy Rose. Jongerden knows the captain and the owner, but didn’t want to identify them out of respect for the waiting families.

« It’s an unfortunate part of our business. It’s a dangerous job, ”he said. “There are a lot of people by the water who are upset today. We send our best wishes to the families of the captain and crew of the ship. ”

The Boston Globe reported that the Emmy Rose was built in 1987 and once owned by Carlos Rafael. Rafael, known as the « Codfather, » was ordered to sell part of his New Bedford-based fishing fleet after pleading guilty to disregarding fishing quotas and smuggling cash out of the country, the Globe reported. At that time the ship was called Sasha Lee.

Martens, executive director of the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association, said the news came during a difficult year that began with the sinking of another Maine ship and the deaths of two fishermen.

The Hayley Ann sank on Jan.. January 50 miles southeast of Portland. 24, with Arnold « Joe » Nickerson IV, the 60-year-old Arundel captain, and Boothbay Harbor 44-year-old crew member Christopher Pinkham killed.

« In Portland and Maine this year we had more than our share of losses in the fishing industry, » Martens said. « We’re still hopeful, but it’s really, really scary. ”
