Eight months after the pandemic, COVID-19 is spreading uncontrollably in Colorado, triggering a third wave that causes first the rising case numbers, record jumps in hospital stays and now the risk of the state’s intensive care units in the coming Weeks to be flooded.

With much of the Denver area moving to red on the state’s coronavirus restrictions dial, Denver Post health reporters Jessica Seaman and Meg Wingerter surveyed Colorado state hospitals and interviewed more than a dozen doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers about the toll this latest surge in COVID-19 is taking.

What Meg and Jessica found were bed scarce hospitals and, even more troubling, staff as the third wave of the pandemic hit harder than the first surge last spring. Hospitals are now treating COVID-19 patients in addition to anything they normally see as, unlike the spring, people no longer avoid medical treatment for fear of the virus. There is also no support for troubled health care workers, as a nationwide increase means hospitals everywhere are stressed and everyone is competing for limited resources.

In addition, more and more doctors are contracting the virus themselves – and not necessarily from work. The coronavirus is spreading so widely in the community that a doctor said, « I feel like there’s a knock on our windows and doors. ”

We hope you take the time to read this important look at the state of the Colorado pandemic.

Level red was once the highest level on Colorado’s dial and would have triggered a stay home order, but state officials pushed back the threshold counties need for a lockdown by adding an even higher status – level – purple – that Polis said, called only when the hospitals are overcrowded.

« We must act now to save lives, » said the governor. “We must act now to avoid a shutdown or lockdown. ”Read more …

Here’s the latest breakdown from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment of the restrictions associated with each level of the color-coded COVID dial in Colorado, including Level Red – where 15 counties including Denver are headed on Friday – and the brand new level Purple.

The following counties will be announced on Friday May 20th. November 2020, move to red level: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, La Plata, Logan, Mesa, Morgan, Routt, Summit and Washington. Read more …

People who stood in line on Friday to devour the In-N-Out burger fare should better pack lunch or dinner. The waiting time at the newly opened location in Aurora was 14 hours, according to the police.

An extremely long line of vehicles meandered into the new restaurant throughout the day, where six moonlit Aurora police officers worked together to keep an eye on the crowd and traffic. Read more …

In accordance with the latest Level Red restrictions, Denver restaurants are in the process of closing indoor dining and moving the last call to 8pm. m. However, some companies have chosen to close entirely for the time being, while others rely solely on takeaway. Few can accommodate heated single-family spaces outdoors.

The effects of these recent restrictions remain to be seen and felt, but starting in November. 14 received new unemployment claims in the state 22. 6% higher than in the previous week, with 9. 171 regular applications compared to 7. 483 in the week up to November. 7th. For the final week of October, housing and hospitality workers had the highest number of jobless claims of any industry in Colorado, with 16. 9% of regular claims submitted. Read more …

If Gov. . Jared Polis issued a nationwide stay home order in March. He did so with the knowledge that the federal discharge for coronaviruses – including 1. $ 200 checks, $ 600 weekly unemployment benefits, and small business loans – would fuel a wide range of Coloradans facing economic ruin that can come with it: hunger, housing instability, mental health crises, unemployment.

When it comes to viruses, things are even worse today than they were when he issued that order, which shut down most of the state’s retail business for more than a month and preceded a temporary flattening of the COVID-19 curve in Colorado. This time, however, there is no federal financial safety net because Congress has not agreed on a new stimulus package. Read more …
