World News – USA – Power crews prepare for noxious winds and rain on Christmas Day

. .

ROCKLAND (CBS) – Powerline crews left their families on Christmas Eve and rolled to Rockland to respond to outages caused by high winds.

« This will be a short, high-intensity rain and wind event, » said Samantha Phillips, director of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency
Emergency officials prepare for a Christmas storm that could wreak havoc across the state.

« Just be prepared that in a storm like this you can be without power for a day, possibly two days, » she said.

« The floods can affect our underground system and the high winds affect our system at the poles, » said Scott Kelley, line worker at Eversource. The company canceled the vacation so the sales force would be ready to respond to outages. « I’ve been doing this for 31 years and this is my first vacation ever canceled on vacation. ”

As the storm approaches, people are asked to prepare by charging the electronics. Getting fuel for generators; ensure that flashlights, batteries and consumables are accessible; and bring in decorations that can blow away.

« Of course we’re going to cut trees and things like that. There will be some unforeseen dangers, ”said Aaron Kelly, part of a crew hired from Oklahoma. He left home on Wednesday morning.

« I’m telling you what – I was a little baffled when I was told I had to leave my family and stuff, but you know, it’s part of the job, it comes with the territory, » he said.

Bucket trucks, however, cannot really travel safely in winds in excess of 35 mph, so repairs may be delayed if the wind is too strong during the storm.
While workers can’t be with their families on Christmas, they want to make sure everyone else’s holidays are merry and bright.

« I’d rather you have power (and) not sit there and celebrate Christmas in the dark, » said Aaron Kelly.
