GARY, Ind. (CBS) – A murder suspect escaped from custody Monday afternoon when extradited from Texas to northwest Indiana.

About 3 p. m. The Lake County, Indiana Sheriff’s Transportation Department was informed that Leon Taylor of Hammond had escaped from a private contracted van.

Taylor is a black man, 6 feet tall and 162 pounds, with hazel eyes and brown hair. He had been wanted for murder for a murder in East Chicago, Indiana.

Wisconsin, an agent for REDI Transports from Green Bay, was transporting Taylor from Texas when he was escaping on 35th Avenue and Grant Street in Gary, the sheriff’s office said. No information was given on how he escaped.

The agent called Gary’s police department, and the sheriff’s office helped find it, along with a Lake County Aviation Unit helicopter and a K-9 unit.

When he escaped, Taylor was holding onto a belly chain with handcuffs and a leg rest. He wore a gray hoodie with an additional black hoodie underneath, black Puma tennis shoes, and black jeans.

All extraditions outside of a 250 mile radius of Lake County will be processed by the courts. The sheriff’s department will then be informed of the estimated time of arrival at the county jail. In this case, the sheriff’s office helps due to Taylor’s escape and the fact that he was taken to the county jail.

Taylor is considered dangerous. Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to call 911.
