BREDA, Netherlands (AP) – Rose Lavelle scored again against the Netherlands, Kristie Mewis scored on her first appearance for the US in six years and the U. . S.. . Women won a rematch of last year’s World Cup final 2-0 on Friday.

The older sister of starter Sam Mewis came as a substitute in the second half and scored in the 70. minute. It was Kristie Mewis’ second goal for the team after her first in 2013.

The US had not played for 261 days because of the coronavirus pandemic. The top ranked Americans have won all nine games they have played this year.

Lavelle also scored a goal when the US beat the Netherlands in Lyon, France last year to claim their second straight world title.

Nine of the 11 U. . S.. . The starters for the final were on the grid on Friday. Alex Morgan was particularly missed, who made her 170th birthday in the second half. Appearance in the team was substituted on.

Morgan, who currently plays for Tottenham, hadn’t played for the US since the World Cup final because she was pregnant and gave birth to daughter Charlie.

Dutch trainer Sarina Wiegman was absent from the team because of a personal non-COVID-19 issue. Wiegman, a former Dutch midfielder who has coached the team since 2017, will succeed Phil Neville as England coach next September.

Kristie Mewis joined her younger sister on the field and scored nine minutes later. Sam Mewis was one of the first to give her sister a hug in celebration.

Kristie Mewis played well in the Challenge Cup and the Fall Series of the National Women’s Soccer League with the Houston Dash and was called up to the national team.

The U. . S.. . was without Lindsey Horan, who signed COVID-19 and didn’t travel to Europe for the match.

The teams were silent before the game for Diego Maradona, the legendary Argentine player who passed away earlier this week.

The U. . S.. . The team wore pre-match warm-ups with the message “Black Lives Matter” on the front. Nine players knelt during the national anthem.

The players made a statement before kick-off, some of which said: “Today we wear Black Lives Matter to affirm human decency. We protest against racial injustice and police brutality against black people. We protest against the racist infrastructures that do not give black and brown people the same opportunities to achieve their dreams, including playing on this team. ”
