EDMONTON – The United States will play for gold in the Junior Ice Hockey World Championship after beating Finland 4-3 in the tournament’s semi-finals on Monday.

Arthur Kaliyev broke a 3: 3 deadlock with 1:16 to get the Americans into the gold medal game against Canada.

Alex Turcotte, John Farinacci and Matthew Boldy also scored goals for the Americans, who have already won four golds, including their last one in 2017.

Kasper Simontaival had two goals and Roni Hirvonen also found the end point for Finland, who will fight for bronze against Russia.

Spencer Knight, one of eight returning players for a U. . S.. . The team, which finished sixth after a quarter-final loss to Finland last year, stopped 33 of 36 shots. Kari Piiroinen made 21 saves for the Finns.

Canada, last year’s gold medalist, beat the 2020 silver medalists from Russia 5-0 in the second semi-final on Monday. Both medal games will take place on Tuesday at Rogers Place.

Turcotte held back a Finnish defender to brush home a bouncing puck from the top of the crease and open the scoring at 12:39 for the first half.

The Finns were quick to respond to a power game. Simontaival finished a one-touch pass from Kasper Puutio on a set play at 2:06 pm to level the result.

Knight stopped 18 of 19 shots for 40 minutes and was rewarded by his teammates when the U. . S.. . scored twice in 1:07 of the second period to create a two-goal lead in the third frame.

Jackson LaCombe caught Finland making a change and slicked Farinacci down the middle from his own zone to an outlier. The American striker snapped the puck past Piiroinen at 3:53 p.m..

While Boldy had a man at an advantage, he knocked Trevor Zegras on the side of the net with a perfect pass to make it 3-1, three minutes from time.

Zegras’ assist gives him 16 points in six games, linking him to Jeremy Roenick (1989) for the second highest singles tournament score in American history. Doug Weight set the record in 1991 with 19 points.

Simontaival brought Finland back in the middle of the third half when he passed his forehand in the slot and hit Knight with the side of the glove, and Hirvonen made a power play with a rebound for the winning goal 3:43 remaining.
