A week after the sale of Deshaun Watson and the Texans, the Browns held back Carson Wentz and the Eagles (24-20) to improve to 7-3 for the first time since 1989.
It’s been four years since the Browns got their chance to win Wentz with the No.. 2 Selection of the 2016 design. Since then, Wentz has had an up and down career. The climax came when he did most of the heavy lifting during a 2017 regular season, only to see the Eagles win a Super Bowl without him.
The Browns have now been bypassed after bypassing Wentz. A year later, they missed a shot at Watson. Now, however, the Eagles are 3-6-1 and are trying to stay on a division that doesn’t have a win record. And after the win on Sunday, the Browns stay in the middle of the AFC playoff picture.
The quarterback the Browns eventually drafted in the first round – Baker Mayfield – had a lot more help on Sunday. Citing a resuscitated running game, the Browns ended ball possession time nearly 10 minutes ahead. Nick Chubb rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown. Kareem Hunt added 80 yards and a touchdown.
The Browns led 17: 3 at halftime, but only 17: 13 after three quarters. Mayfield’s first interception since week 7 helped the Eagles have a short field in the third quarter, resulting in a touchdown. A touchdown catch from Jarvis Landry – his first of the season – brought the Browns back two points early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles responded, but an interception by Denzel Ward sealed the win in the last minute
The Browns were without Myles Garrett, but that didn’t stop the defense from pursuing Wentz. Sheldon Richardson had two sacks and Olivier Vernon added another. Only one team this season has failed to get at least three sacks against the Eagles.
Wentz entered the game with 12 interceptions that topped the league, and added that courtesy of Ward and Ronnie Harrison.
