Hello and welcome back to the daily WJC discussion thread here at Copper & Blue. Today is a busy hockey day and a multitude of interesting storylines to see. The last two days have been disappointing for Oiler fans due to Holloway and Broberg injuries, but it looks like we’re getting some relief today.

The first game of the day that is currently playing as I type this is the Czech Republic versus the United States. The Czechs suffered a shocking 2-0 loss to Russia on Sunday and will try to continue their victories against another good opponent. The Americans, who lost to the Russians in the opening match, are trying to avoid angering the Czechs again. Make sure that Jan Mysak leads a very motivated team in the Czech Republic. At the other end of the ice, all eyes will be on Canadien’s prospect, Cole Caufield, to show his worth in a critical game for the States.

The afternoon game is one that Oiler fans should look forward to. On the surface a Canada v. The game in Switzerland doesn’t leave much to be desired, but the fact that Dylan Holloway will return to the team’s top line changes that. Holloway will play alongside Connor McMichael and Dylan Cozens. It’s a great position for Holloway as his linemates have been some of the most productive on the team throughout the tournament. Holloway will be the man to see on the Canadian side while Lorenzo Canonica will be interesting on a desperate Swiss team.

In our last game tonight, Russia will face Austria. The Russians suffered a humiliating defeat against the Czechs on Sunday and will try to allay their frustrations against the Austrians. On the other hand, Austria should take the Czechs victory as a sign that this is a beatable team. I expect both teams to be highly motivated and that it could be a more exciting game than expected. The Russians remain strong favorites. Vasili Podkolzin is my type to be seen in Russia, and the only real man who pays attention to Austrians is Marco Rossi.

It’s a great day for hockey at World Juniors and I hope everyone enjoys it!
