World news – USC men’s basketball game with Stanford has been postponed due to the COVID-19 problem with Trojans

USC announced a "suspected" COVID-19 problem under the program.

For the second time this season, the USC men’s basketball team had to postpone a game shortly before the start due to COVID-19 issues in the program.

On Thursday, the game of Trojans in Stanford was postponed indefinitely because « there is a suspicion of COVID in connection with our program, » USC announced 14 minutes before the Cardinal’s scheduled game.

In a follow-up tweet, USC announced it was working with Pac-12 and Stanford to find a date to postpone the conference game.

In December, USC was closed for two weeks because of a single positive COVID-19 case on the list and the resulting contact tracing that required all players to be quarantined.

In this case, it was also a USC Stanford game that was immediately postponed. This game at the Galen Center for the Trojans’ Pac-12 prelude was one of four games affected by this COVID-19 issue for USC. One game in the state of Oregon was postponed while non-conference games against South Florida and Texas Southern were canceled.

USC (11-3, 5-2 in Pac-12) have just made up for the missed game in the US state of Oregon on Tuesday with a two-point loss to the Beavers. The rescheduled game against Stanford was only announced last week for February 2nd.

Now the Trojans and Cardinals have to find another open date on the calendar.

After Thursday’s announcement, much is still unknown about the current situation at USC. USC has not disclosed whether a player or coach has tested positive for COVID-19 or whether an inconclusive test result was returned prior to that game. And if there is a positive case, there is no telling whether others will be affected by the contact tracing.

The Pac-12 currently requires seven student athletes for a team to participate in a game.

USC announced that the two-week shutdown would be required two days after the positive COVID-19 case was discovered in December. Therefore, it will take some time for the program to go through all the contact tracing logs required after Thursday.
