The UAE tour leader Mathieu van der Poel has left the race after a positive coronavirus test for a team member.
The Dutchman Van der Poel won the opening phase on Sunday but will not continue after being Alpecin-Fenix team has retired to « protect the racing bladder ».
The race in the United Arab Emirates was won by Brit Adam Yates last year after it ended prematurely after several positive coronavirus tests .
Yates finished the first stage of this year’s edition 13 seconds behind Van der Poel on his debut for Ineos Grenadiers.
Chris Froome, who has switched to Israel Start Up Nation, lost during the 176 km long opening stage of Al Dhafra Castle after Al Mirfa more than eight minutes on Sunday, with strong cross winds forming relays and dividing the peloton.
