Angry veterans plan to pile on the steps of Parliament in Canberra Monday to pressure Prime Minister Scott Morrison to « do the right thing » and open an investigation into the deaths of their fallen companions.
Nothing less than a royal commission will appease the thousands of men and women who are calling for change.
Just last week, a 32-year-old former able seaman in the Australian Navy was one of 18 veterans who have committed suicide in the past three months.
« He has shown no real symptoms for going this route, » said one of his former Navy crew members, who asked not to be named.
« He’s had problems in the last few weeks and everyone has been looking for him. There is always a connection with time, » said the veteran.
« When you’re in the military, we’re told to just keep going. Many of us, including myself, are trained to just try. »
« Once you get out, you are not in that controlled environment and not knowing how to adapt and relate to other people.
« Everyone who goes to sea affects your state of mind for the rest of your life. »
Crusey’s friends and hundreds of other veterans and their families will all have their eyes on Canberra on Monday, as Mr Morrison points out on where he stands on the support of Australian veterans.
A motion tabled in the Senate Thursday called on the government to set up a royal commission on the suicide rate among current and former employees of the Australian armed forces.
It has been backed by Labor and the Greens, as well as One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, and will go to the House of Commons tomorrow.
A government spokesman said Mr Morrison would reveal his position on convening a royal commission when the House vote takes place.
Julie-Ann Finney, who lost her son – Navy veteran David Finney – to suicide, has been pushing for a royal commission for two years.
« This time the government needs to get clean and ensure that a royal commission is a full, open and transparent investigation, » she told The Sunday Telegraph.
« No more spin, no more trying to appease us with medals, forums, inquiries, reviews and mother’s committees. Many must be held accountable for their actions, and if guilty, they must not be able to do so in the future to act in their present capacity. » .
