Welsh head coach Wayne Pivac said he remained « deaf » after his team was denied a Grand Slam when France claimed victory in one of the most exciting six-nation climaxes in history.
With 10 minutes left in Paris, Wales led by 10 points, with France reduced to 14 men. Then two players had the sin and were held back by an attempt by Charles Ollivon.
Brice Dulin then scored another attempt in stoppage time to take a staggering 32:30 win with both teams still on the Chasing the title, but hopes for the Welsh Grand Slam are gone.
« It’s a pretty numb feeling. The guys made such a fantastic effort, » said Pivac.
« We had two players lost for the penalty and the final warning, it was tough to defend at this point, but the guys had done brilliantly to hold out. «
» It was one too many attacks. Certainly our discipline got us in didn’t help for the last 10 minutes.
« At the end of the day the penalty increased and we knew what would happen there with a final warning. »
It had all gone so well for Wales, with the hosts from head to toe stood and then in a second half full of incidents where the TMO seemed to be involved in almost every decision it made, it was clearly on the scoreboard.
« There was an important point for us where we started a great journey » said Pivac.
« There was a yellow card, but I was expecting a penalty attempt. If that happens, it’s probably the championship and the Grand Slam.
« The players were so close and yet so far. It’s a tough time, but we have to be proud of the effort.
» From a Grand Waiting for six days to slam is frustrating. But all we can do now is sit back and watch next week. «
Wales’ title hopes depend on France not beating Scotland with one bonus point and 21 points next Friday.
» We didn’t win the game and that was the main focus, « he said. » I thought we were pretty good for 80 minutes, it was just those last few seconds.
« Our poor discipline put pressure on us. We thank France for the last 15 but when we look back it was both our indiscipline and our excellent French game.
« We are proud and privileged to go ahead with the tournament and win the Triple Crown. Hopefully we’ve made the people at home proud, but that’s out of our control now. «
