World news – Wesley Fofana: My mother was offended and my sister was aiming for school when I left France

As a boy he was small and very shy, with legs so thin that his trainers joked that they looked like chopsticks. They told him to have an easy time fighting for the ball because they feared the big kids would crush him in his 50s-50s.

But Wesley Fofana was never easy. He threw himself into a duel, landed on the ground, but just jumped to his feet again. « A pure and tough defender who loves duels, » recalls the manager of his U13 team at Bel Air, an amateur club in Marseille. And there was something else that set Fofana apart: deep game intelligence and the ability to be a “sponge” for analysis and tactical instruction, which is rare for someone his age.
