After adding Corey Kluber earlier this month, the Yankees added another right-handed man who recently looked into injuries while taking on Pittsburgh’s Jameson Taillon on Sunday, a source confirmed.
Der 29-year-old has not made a start since May 1, 2019 after his second operation on Tommy John, but has done well in good health.
The deal is still pending and the Yankees will have four prospects for the rebuilt pirates send: RHP Miguel Yajure, RHP Roansy Contreras, 18-year-old infielder Maikel Escotto, and 21-year-old OF Canaan Smith.
The move also allows the Yankees to place on their 40-man roster (Yajure and Contreras ), so they have to move another one as they have to add Kluber and DJ LeMahieu and Taillon.
Taillon was the second choice between Manny Machado and Bryce Harper in 2010, but has not yet lived up to expectations lt.
He will join a rotation led by Gerrit Cole, followed by Kluber and Taillon. Luis Severino will return from surgery on Tommy John mid-season. He pitched just 37 ⅓ innings in 2019 before undergoing surgery for a flexor tendon and UCL revision repair. Previously, Taillon had surgery from Tommy John in 2014, and he was excluded from a sports hernia in 2015.
Taillon also had surgery in 2017 to treat testicular cancer. He returned to the majors less than six weeks later.
The Yankees expect Taillon to regain his shape and health from 2018, when he made 32 starts and pitched 191 innings with a 3.20 ERA. </ The two teams had previously discussed a deal for Joe Musgrove before Pittsburgh distributed the right-handed to San Diego.
