World news – Zack Snyder’s Justice League Review: Four hours of fan service is too much, but now it all makes sense

Context is everything to analyze the weirdness of the Snyder cut, which is ubiquitous but undoubtedly better than what was before.

Parsing the cultural event of « Zack Snyder’s Justice League, » also known as the « Snyder Cut, » may require a PhD in legitimizing fan culture for the past 25 years. Yet even taking its quality into account requires a reasonable amount of context.

On one level, the four hours and six parts (plus an endless 30-minute epilogue) in this bizarre remodeling of old material through sleepy performances, cheesy subplots, and insane ones World structures clouded that make the Marvel Cinematic Universe look like Shakespeare. However, the entire arc of this “League of the Just” is consistently coherent, with the occasional intrigue and inspired visuals, and sometimes even fun. « Zack Snyder’s Justice League » focuses the drama of the outlawed actor Ray Fisher as a cyborg and records some of the ostentatious fighting sequences until they break.

All of this is in stark contrast to the crappy version Joss Whedon completed in 2017 when Snyder left the project due to the suicide of his teenage daughter and a desire to spend more time with his family. Watching « Zack Snyder’s Justice League » with no background would likely result in a serious endurance test, even if the action is successful. But seeing it in the light of the botched, confusing mish-mash of the Whedon version goes a long way in Snyder’s favor.

And as alarming as it may sound, the fan base who pressed #ReleasetheSnyderCut and somehow got their request. Despite the dubious creation of Snyder as a writer by legions of followers who likely never read (or argued with) Andrew Sarris’ Notes on American Cinema, the filmmaker maintains a unique approach to blockbuster storytelling, with a Gothic whimsy punctuated by male anger and anger electrified by rampant CGI. (Women aren’t his forte.) The Snyder touch is present in everything from « 300 » to « Watchmen » and « Sucker Punch » to varying degrees of success, but « Zack Snyder’s Justice League » sets it free on the largest scale Date.

The tragic backstory of Snyder’s experience with the project doesn’t exactly permeate the storytelling, but a certain amount of pathos creeps in through the creation of a dull, expansive meditation on the process of saving a broken world. It is literally released on HBO Max and literally revolves around Snyder is a household name and undeniably represents the unique vision of a filmmaker whose maximalist approach may stave off as many people as it pleases but certainly offers a real cinematic of attraction for those who even demanded it.

There is another way to express this, however: the lengthy nature of this relatively simple act, in which heroes save the world, is often just a gratuitous exercise in style. Once again, Batman (Ben Affleck, still trapped in Grizzly Kataton mode) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot, whose ass kicking is a routine highlight) round off Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher ). Together they bring Superman (Henry Cavill) back to life after his death at the end of Snyder’s (undoubtedly terrible and humorless) « Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice » just in time to face a rather silly, furious threat to existence, as we know it.

The interdimensional world-killing animal known as the Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) is still ravaging the earth to receive the three elusive « mother boxes » with which Overlord Darkseid (seen here for the first time) all of humanity can transform its zombie-like slaves. That’s the core of the stakes, as Snyder pulls out the bloated runtime with free homage reels to practically every member of the team – operatic slo-mo moments with pop music that indulge in their grandeur like a kind of comic-con tone poem.

And yes, some of them are really exciting: a shirtless Momoa chugging alcohol while the water rises over his head; Nick Cave said, « They told us our gods would outlive us. » A grieving Lois Lane (Amy Adams) wanders through the gloomy metropolis. Miller’s dizzying lightning bolt sped around to rescue the victim of a car accident (Iris West in a fleeting cameo) while he stuffed her lost hot dog into his shirt pocket. Moments like these help Snyder escape the grim, self-serious stupidity of « Batman v Superman » in favor of tangents that are meant to please in small doses.

There is no question that the MCU has this kind of exuberant mythmaking does better to tell stories that don’t require such grueling details. However, this variant has a special new addition. The strongest narrative arc of « Zack Snyder’s Justice League » belongs to a character who was basically invisible in the previous version: Fisher’s Cyborg, a former college soccer player who was revived as a machine by his scientific father (Joe Morton). It’s hard to tell if Fisher, a relative newbie, is doing a remarkable job, with half his face buried in metal and the script calling for such a subdued, icy performance that is more robotic than human. But the character’s hyper-intelligent, digitally-imprinted mind makes him the most intriguing addition to this colorful crew – and his dad problems are far more compelling than the usual « brooding Batman » routine. This may not be the best iteration of Cyborg possible, but it does show some potential.

In fact, potential is surfacing throughout the Zack Snyder Justice League. The gray tones of the cameraman Fabian Wagner, which in the new aspect ratio of 1.33: 1 have an uncanny, expressionistic quality that is equal to the apocalyptic tone. Steppenwolf and Superman both have more flashy, shadier outfits as the film more clearly takes up the idea of a dark world about to break out into a scorched earth battlefield. When the superheroes finally team up and come together for a dynamic showdown against Steppenwolf who unites every power in sacred union, the rapid-fire energy of every moment will pay off enough to make … well, part of the journey worthwhile. If only it would stop there.

Instead, Snyder handles the most gratuitous overload of false endings since « The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, » with a series of post-credit sequences crammed into an epilogue that just doesn’t stop. At least three main villains and one hero have been exhumed from the cutting room floor for various half-hearted reasons, some more amusing than others. As these fragments continue, it is finally clear that « Zack Snyder’s Justice League » was designed solely to please the people who demanded its existence as a rallying cry. The movie isn’t just theirs. they practically did it.

« Zack Snyder’s Justice League » is a product designed to celebrate its existence. If the Justice Leaguers conclude that one of the mother boxes can revive the Man of Steel, it comes from the knowledge that technology is « turning smoke back into a house ». That’s what Snyder did here. This specially renovated home may not be everyone’s favorite place to live, but the entire concept of the Snyder Cut was designed for an era defined by customization: enter at your own risk or do not disturb yourself.
