Mason Greenwood looked like he was making headlines with his first-half strike, but Rashford came off the bench to remind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he is the main man at Old Trafford

He is only the second United player to score a hat-trick as a substitute after Solskjaer achieved the feat against Nottingham Forest in 1999

United, who have had a tough start to the season, now have six points in two games after building on their impressive opening win over Paris Saint-Germain

Rashford and Bruno Fernandes were surprisingly left on the bench as United set out in search of their first home win of the season

They took the lead in the middle of the first half when Greenwood, 19, received a deep ball from Paul Pogba and stroked the ball over Peter Gulacsi and into the far corner for his first goal in the Champions League

The home side came under pressure from Julian Nagelsmann’s side, but substitute Rashford struck three times after coming on in the 63rd minute to put the result out of doubt

Anthony Martial also got into the act, scoring a penalty on an exceptional evening for the three-time European champions, who are now three points ahead of Group H

« For us that means going forward There was definitely some space there We have Bruno and Paul (Pogba) on the ball We looked dangerous and we could score every time we let’s go

« It was a real team performance. Those who started did well and the substitutes did well too We can’t ask for much more than that in terms of attitude and intention to go kill the game It worked in our favor « 

Greenwood, who last month was sent home in disgrace from England for breaking coronavirus protocols, started alongside Martial

They broke the deadlock when Pogba advanced from midfielder and fed Greenwood, who had perfectly timed his run into the box and hit his shot with infallible precision

United had a nervous wait as VAR looked on for a potential offside, but the goal was cleared

Leipzig came back strong, pinning United for long stretches of the rest of the first half

United goalkeeper David de Gea made a clean save to prevent an effort from Ibrahima Konate at the far post

The visitors, now with substitutes Marcel Sabitzer and Alexander Sorloth on the pitch, played with urgency but created few clear chances as United kept their form

Solskjaer called on Rashford, Fernandes and Scott McTominay to change the dynamic and reaped the rewards

Fernandes sent a superb ball for the first time to Rashford, who crossed and passed Gulasci in the 74th minute

The linesman raised his flag for offside but the VAR verified the decision, ruling that the striker started his run in his half of the field and allowed the goal

Rashford shot at home again four minutes later to score 3-0, but then allowed Martial to take the penalty after the Frenchman was shot in the box
