Yellowstone: A Timeline of the Dutton Family’s Legacy

Yellowstone, the Western drama co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, has become one of Paramount’s most successful shows. The saga of the Dutton family, owners of Montana’s largest ranch, has kept viewers enthralled for five seasons of family drama, blackmail, violence, and betrayal. The show has since spawned two star-studded prequel shows, 1883 and 1923, revealing how the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch was founded and how the family kept it running through Western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.

1883 and 1923: The Founding of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch

In 1883, James and Margaret Dutton flee their life of poverty in Tennessee with their two children, Elsa and John, for a fresh start. The family travels to Texas and joins a wagon train full of immigrant settlers heading out west along the Oregon Trail. After surviving numerous outside attacks, disease outbreaks, and perilous conditions along the way, the Duttons are once again struck by tragedy when Elsa is fatally wounded during a confrontation with some Lakota warriors. James and Margaret decide to settle their family in Paradise Valley after Elsa’s death, founding what would later become known as the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Following James’s death in 1893, it’s revealed that Margaret wrote to his brother Jacob, pleading for him to come to Montana and help her raise her two surviving children, John and Spencer. Jacob and his wife Cara arrive to find Margaret « frozen in a snowdrift, » while their two malnourished boys are also on the brink of death. Jacob and Cara decide to raise John and Spencer as their own, as well as take over the ranch James had founded. Jacob and Cara have taken James’s dream and « made it into an empire » by 1923, and Jacob is now Montana’s livestock commissioner.

2018 to Present: The Seventh-Generation Patriarch of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch

In 2018, John Dutton III is the seventh-generation patriarch of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the largest ranch in the United States. John’s eldest son Lee is a livestock agent who hopes to take over the ranch one day, while Jamie, his middle son, is pursuing a political career as Montana’s Attorney General. John’s only daughter, Beth, works for one of America’s top banks. His youngest son, Kayce, is a former Navy Seal who lives on the adjacent Broken Rock Indian reservation with his wife Monica and son Tate. Throughout the seasons, the Dutton ranch is constantly at odds with land developers, the Broken Rock reservation, and other real-estate moguls. Season five of Yellowstone begins with John being sworn in as governor of Montana, while a formidable new opponent from Market Equities, Sarah Atwood, arrives in town to shake things up.

Yellowstone, with its intricate plotlines and complex characters, has become a fan favorite. The show’s success can be attributed to its ability to keep viewers on the edge of their seats with its unpredictable twists and turns. With season five currently airing, fans are eagerly waiting to see what the future holds for the Dutton family and their legacy.
