. . PISCATAWAY, N. . J. . (AP) - Michigan had to switch quarterbacks, work three hours overtime and play for about 4 1/2 hours to avoid the worst start to the football program in 53 years. It was worth it. Hassan Haskins finished fourth from less than a meter in extra time and the Wolverines lost three games on Saturday night by overtaking Rutgers 48-42. "This win means a lot," said defender Chris Hinton. "It is the first step to get back on track. We didn't quit. We just kept swinging. The guy who took the biggest blows was second quarterback Cade McNamara, who replaced starter Joe Milton late in the second quarter. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for another when Michigan (2-3, 2-3 Big Ten) presented Rutgers (1-4, 1-4) with his fourth straight loss. "Cade was excellent," said Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who had the worst start with his team in his six-year tenure. "Really gritty. Really gritty performance in every way. His play was inspiring. I can't say enough great things. Michigan missed the 2-point conversion after Haskins touchdown, but safety Daxton Hill intercepted Noah Vedone's desperation to move from the 24-yard line to the end zone to end the game. It was the second straight week that Rutgers coach Greg Schiano put his team in the lead in the second half. "There were a lot of people who were really badly injured," said Schiano. “Needless to say, some people in the field really lost their courage. You know we're not there yet. We're just not quite there yet. And we'll keep chopping and keep working. We will get there. Vedral threw down an 11-yard touchdown pass to Aron Cruickshank, then carried two defenders into the end zone. . .
