KOCHI: The Kerala Startup Mission will soon open The Digital Hub, one of the world’s largest product development centers for technology startups in Kalamasery. The hub, which is planned on an area of 2 lakh sqft, will be the incubator for futuristic designs and prototypes
Kerala’s rendezvous with information technology has reached new heights in recent years. In addition to expansion plans by multinational corporations, the state’s startup industry is also heralding a silent revolution. Under the direction of the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), countless ventures within the Kerala Technological Innovation Zone (KTIZ) are in the pipeline.
The most recent of these is the introduction of The Digital Hub, which is part of KTIZ’s development phase II it’s planned. Touted as one of the world’s largest product development centers for technology startups, the hub is being built on an area of 2 lakh sqft with a special focus on innovative designs and prototypes.
The facility will also have a design incubator, a healthcare incubator house a competence center for Mouser electronics, co-working spaces, design studios, an investor group and an innovation center. “The facility will be open to international organizations and institutions to manufacture first-class products. It will also act as a one-stop product design and development solution for software and hardware components such as AI, robotics, AR / VR, Internet of Things (IoT) and Natural Language Processing (NLP), ”said a KSUM official. In addition, the Phase II expansion by an additional 3.40 lakh sqft will include three more buildings. The entire project is being developed with funds from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
« The digital hub is being built in the first building of expansion stage II. The 2 km² facility also has a theater with a capacity of 500 seats, Office space, training center, studio, conference rooms, meeting rooms, cafeteria and vehicle parking. The hub has the potential to create over 2,500 jobs in nearly 200 startups, ”the official said.
Affordable cancer care
KSUM and the Cochin Cancer Research Center (CCRC) are also jointly building the Center for Biomedical Research, Innovation and Commercialization in Cancer at the hub. It provides biotech, biomedical and AI laboratories, incubation rooms, and support systems to develop affordable cures for cancer. The 11,000 m² center will house 29 healthcare start-ups focusing on biotechnology, biomedicine, deep-tech or fintech-related cancer diagnostics and the development of therapeutic solutions. « It will be India’s first focused cancer research incubator and will soon work with other National Cancer Grid and Kerala Cancer Care Grid cancer centers, industry leaders and commercialization experts to provide the best, most affordable treatment technology, » the official said. As part A 22,400 square meter design incubator is also being built next to the digital hub. The incubator will nurture design-based startups and creative talents, and provide shared workspaces, meeting rooms, classrooms, break rooms and more.

KSUMS KTIZ
The Kerala Technological Innovation Zone was established as a premier infrastructure facility for cross-industry technology incubators to promote their startups and support local businesses. The 13.2 hectare zone includes built-up start-up modules, high-end manufacturing laboratories, research and development facilities and commercial office space.
Third phase for the future
The Phase III expansion of KTIZ is on the way and KSUM signed a letter of intent with the Software Technology Park of India in 2016, Ecosystem for Entrepreneurs. It will have facilities such as incubation rooms and discussion / meeting rooms.
