New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley continues to make progress in rehab from a cruciate ligament tear that he suffered in the second week of last season.
Barkley returned to training earlier this month but has to enter the field in a preseason game. However, he plans to participate in team exercises during this week’s joint training session with the New England Patriots.
« That would be a big, big step forward, and the reason for that is simple, » said Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network today in the air. « You can trust the Patriots to do nothing bad and essentially endanger Saquon Barkley and his surgically repaired knee. » That is what Giants head coach Joe Judge said in an interview with Rapoport’s colleague Kim Jones ahead of today’s preseason game against Cleveland .
Pregame, NYG-CLE: Joe Judge said he’ll feel « better » using Saquon in 7v7 & team practice this week when NE defenders like Dont’a Hightower are up the field are. « They’ll take care of him, » said JJ. NYG also « absolutely not » ruled Saquon out for the season opener.
The Giants were shy about Barkley’s status for Week 1 against Denver, but didn’t officially expel him, Judge clarified. If he plays he will likely be limited, but just bringing him out would be a win for New York.
« For that he has to keep making progress, taking further positive steps forward, » said Rapoport. « He takes on the field against New England, shows he’s bursting, protects himself in these team reps, maybe week 1 is a bigger chance than it was a few months ago. »
