The day after McIlroy shot five birdies at the Summit Club as part of a bogey-free 67, he again kept the blemishes off the scorecard while opening the gates. He scored a total of eight birdies and a final eagle to fire 10 under 62 and compete in the CJ Cup.
McIlroys 62 marked his best score on the tour since receiving the same number in the third round of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational 2019 shot, and it comprised a distance of five straight birdies in places 3-7.
“I played an eight-hole straight par yesterday, I made eight pars in a row. It was nice to end last night with a birdie, ”said McIlroy. “Then today I played a stretch of golf, played nine holes in 6 unders and all of a sudden you feel a little better. Yeah, I mean the big thing is I’ve been playing for the past two days and only kept it short and I haven’t done any bogeys. That’s huge.
« I said to [my caddy] Harry [Diamond] yesterday, I can’t remember the last time I played a round of golf without a bogey and now I’ve played two rounds in a row that so it’s nice to see. «
Ancer, McIlroy feed on each other at the CJ Cup
McIlroy’s last bogey-free lap wasn’t that long ago. In the third round of the BMW Championship in August, he shot 7 under 65. However, it has been almost two years since he last recorded clear laps in a row. He scored 67:68 in the last two rounds of the 2019 WGC HSBC Champions, while at Sheshan International in Shanghai on the weekend (November 2nd-2nd, 2019) he scored nothing worse than par.
McIlroy won in this week. He’ll kick in on Sunday at 19 under, two shots back on leader Rickie Fowler.
« I just wanted to go out and play a good round of golf, » said McIlroy. “I knew I was able to shoot deeper than I had in the past few days, but you never know. Every hole on this course is basically a birdie chance so just try to get it into play, put yourself on the green, and go from there. ”
