West Virginia Mountaineers’ Miles McBride controls the ball against the Syracuse Orange during their second round game in the 2021 NCAA basketball tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on March 21, 2021 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

With names like Derrick Rose, Kemba Walker and Immanuel Quickley on the roster, the Knicks are suddenly full of talent in the guard position. Still, a little more depth would go a long way in supporting the group.

This is where Miles McBride fits. The Knicks drafted the 6-foot-2 Guard after falling into the second round (No. 36 overall) in this year’s draft, and on Tuesday ESPN’s Bobby Marks reported on the details of his contract with his new team > According to Marks, McBride’s contract is guaranteed for two years with a team option for a third year. McBride will earn $ 925,000 as a rookie next season and earn $ 1.8 million in his sophomore year.

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the Knicks are hoping they’ll have a « Kyle » in McBride Lowry Lite « .

» I’m definitely honored to compare my style of play to Kyle Lowry, « McBride told reporters after the draft via Berman. “I know he led the league and I’m ready to do anything to win. It’s something I can safely get over with. ”

In his sophomore year in West Virginia, McBride averaged 15.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. He was also 41.4 percent shot the ball out of 3-point range. « I see people in front of him who I know are better than, » said Erik Martin, assistant coach for West Virginia, to Berman. “He outplayed some of these guys when we played them. He is 6-2, a retired soccer player and a winner. He has toughness. With that he came in the door. Hopefully he’ll be drafted where he’d play. «

McBride is a strong defender, but his smaller stature means he’s likely limited to the position of point guard in the NBA.

» It gives questions about his position, « a scout told Berman. “Is he really a 1? Is he a little 2? Is he a real playmaker? He’s a good defender, good athlete and makes plays, but is he a playmaker? «

» I can definitely see that I have the ball in my hands, « McBride said, according to Berman at the combine. “I feel comfortable with that. But I also feel good when I play from the ball. My ability to shoot is a big part of my game. And to play with another player who has the ball, I definitely can. I’m comfortable making decisions and having the ball in my hands. And because I’m so competitive, I feel like I can find myself on a team that adds a lot of both. ”

Like Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, West Virginia coach Bob Huggins is known for this to be fiery and tenacious.

« I’ve heard from everyone I’ve met, if you can play for Huggins, you can play for anyone, » McBride said per Berman. “I heard that Thibs is a die-hard coach. That’s how I want it to be at this level.

“They (the Knicks) knew me and understood where I came from. You have friends in the West Virginia program. It feels great to be with a team that wants me, understands my game, and sees everything I can do on the floor. «
