A government rift on climate change has widened after a senior national claimed the party had not been « very clearly » consulted on Scott Morrison’s. move to net zero emissions.
The Prime Minister said on Sunday that he was « very clear that we are moving towards net zero ». but made no commitment to meet that target by 2050.
But Queensland Resource Secretary and MP Keith Pitt said Thursday that a net-zero target was « not government policy ». and no plan for change had been made with the junior coalition partner.
â € œThis requires the approval of the Nationals. This agreement was not reached or sought, â ???? he told ABC Radio on Thursday.
â € œMy understanding is very clear: That wasn’t asked by the Nationals, the question wasn’t asked. It would take an agreement, and it wasn’t reached.
Mr Pitt said a decision on a net-zero target would be reached through discussions with the Nationals MPs, but poured cold water on the prospect of the proposal The intervention comes after Mr Morrison stated at a performance in the UK that Australia is moving to a net-zero target that has pledged to reduce emissions by 78 percent from 1990s levels by 2035
Mr Morrison has so far refused to follow other G7 leaders to commit to the 2050 target, but has toned down his language this year after being isolated on the issue in the international community.
“I made it very clear that we were moving towards net zero and I talked about a carbon neutral economy. This is a reality. The new energy industry is coming. It’s a reality ???? he said.
The G7, which Australia has not joined, has pledged to « end any unchecked coal as soon as possible ». and raise $ 100 billion annually to help developing countries cut their emissions.
The plan would meet stiff opposition in the Nationals’ hall, and Mr. Pitt claimed « the technology is out there now »? ??? reduce the carbon footprint of coal.
He insisted that carbon capture technology, which has been debated in Australia for more than a decade, cannot be ruled out.
