Kai Havertz « just wants to be a nice player, » says Glenn Hoddle, who says the Chelsea midfielder « has to be a bit more assertive ».

Havertz has struggled for form since moving from Bayer Leverkusen to Stamford Bridge in September ($ 92 million).

The 21-year-old has built a reputation for being one of the best young playmakers in Europe during his time at Bay Arena but failed to reach the same heights in his early months at Chelsea.

A modest record of four goals in 17 games did little to convince fans that he was worth such a large investment in the summer transfer market. His last underperformance came last week when he lost 2-1 to Wolves.

Calls for Frank Lampard to overthrow Havertz have been widespread, but he will keep his place on the Blues starting grid when West Ham arrives at the Bridge for a crucial London derby clash on Monday night -.

Although Hoddle still believes the ex-Leverkusen star will reach his potential in West London, he wants the German international to progress more consistently instead of sitting back and letting games overtake him.

« At the moment, Havertz is not showing anywhere near the player he was showing in Germany. He plays a little deeper at Chelsea and I think if he gets a little more in the box we’ll see the best of him, « the ex-Chelsea player and head coach told the Evening Standard.

« He’s a good player and more is to come, but he looks like a character who will need some time to settle down.

« It’s almost like he just wants to be a nice player. For me he has to be a little more assertive. Get in the box, hurt yourself a little in the sense of its runnability to get in the box. And I think he’ll score goals.

« He’s having a hard time adjusting, but he’ll get there in the end. He’s still a young man and he’s good enough to adjust to the pace and ferocity of the Premier League. «

Timo Werner also came to Chelsea in the summer after a rapid rise in Germany with RB Leipzig and, like Havertz, has not yet met the expectations for Lampard’s team in the last third.

Hoddle, however, believes in the 47 pounds. 5 million ($ 63 million) who have drawn holes in each of his last eight games in all competitions has shown enough to suggest he will be a valuable asset to the Blues over the long term.

« Werner will be back, he took a little break, but I have no doubt about that. He’s shown enough to Chelsea fans that he’s a top player, « he said.

« I think a goal here or there and he will get back to his best. He is a first-class player, whether in the middle or in width. «
