World news – GB – Coronavirus: Hydroxychloroquine is not helping adults in hospital due to COVID-19, study finds

The health outcomes for the group of patients treated with placebo were largely similar, and the numbers of deaths were equal

Health outcomes for the drug-administered patient group and the placebo group were broadly similar, and the numbers of deaths were equal

Hydroxychloroquine does not benefit adults in hospital due to COVID-19, a new study by a large US research center found.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) study sought to test whether malaria and arthritis – which US President Donald Trump long ago prescribed – works to treat the Coronavirus

Between April and June, researchers split equal and random shots of hydroxychloroquine into 479 coronavirus patients in 34 hospitals

Participants, who included 212 women plus 290 people of Hispanic and black descent, were 57 on average.

This evaluation found that approximately 32% of the hydroxychloroquine group were able to return to a normal life compared to 29% of the placebo participants.

Less than 48% of people in the previous pool were discharged from the hospital 28 days after starting treatment, and only 1% were released in the last group on the same date

The principal investigator of the ORCHID experiment, Dr. Wesley Self, concluded that there were no significant differences between samples.

“The finding that hydroxychloroquine is ineffective in treating COVID-19 was consistent across subgroups of patients and all outcomes assessed, including clinical status, mortality, organ failure, duration of oxygen use and length of hospital stay,” said the emergency doctor. / p>

He also indicated that the result is consistent with similar experiences in the United Kingdom and Brazil.

Another principal investigator, Dr. Samuel Browne, said that while he had hoped that hydroxychloroquine would help, the results are still an important step toward finding effective treatments.

While several studies have yielded different results about whether the drug is working as a preventative or treatment for COVID-19, the NIH study reported the strongest findings yet regarding its ineffectiveness.

In May, Mr. Trump revealed that he was taking it to ward off infection after contracting the virus months later, he said it was also an ingredient in his « treatment cocktail »

Infectious disease expert in America Dr. Anthony Fauci earlier highlighted clinical studies that concluded that the drug has not proven successful in treating the virus – including research conducted by the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health

The Food and Drug Administration initially approved the emergency use of the drug to treat the Coronavirus but canceled the move in June, saying its unproven benefits « do not outweigh known and potential risks », including reports on heart complications
