Ronnie O’Sullivan booked his place in the quarterfinals of the World Grand Prix in Milton Keynes, although he had apparently forgotten the rules.
O’Sullivan defeated Barry Hawkins 4-1, but only after being confused by referee Ben Williams’ explanation of the difference between the three-miss and free-ball laws.
The six-time world champion had an ongoing but lighthearted discussion with Williams that ended with the question, « Are you sure they are the rules? »
Williams held on to his guns and was assisted by game director and former World Final referee Leo Scullion.
O’Sullivan took a century and a half off from victory and will next face Kyren Wilson.
Judd Trump insisted he not get the credit he deserves after driving past Stuart Bingham to make the final eight.
The world number one took advantage of a mistake by Bingham in the last frame to score a 4-3 win and maintain their hopes of reaching their fifth final of the season.
Trump told the World Snooker Tour official website: « I don’t know anyone who started the season like me. I think if it was someone else it would get a lot more popular. « .
« I’m proud of the way I started the season and a lot of the top players outside of the top 4 would take what I already did – and I still have a handful of events left in the season. « . ”
Bingham stalled on a highest bid of 88 but responded with a break of 132 the next as he built a 3-1 lead.
But Trump responded immediately with a century of his own, scoring a 61 break after level dragging after Bingham missed a pink in the middle.
Trump will next face Martin Gould, who defeated Lu Ning 4-1, while Mark Selby also needed a decision maker to squeeze past Liang Wenbo 4-3.
