Kanley was awarded the nation’s highest honor after 50 years of his actions as sergeant in Gunnery Company, Company A, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division of the Republic of Vietnam from January 31 to February 6, 1968 during the Battle of Hue City.

While working as a company artillery sergeant, Kanley fought several hostile attacks as his company moved along a highway towards Hue City to relieve friendly forces who had been besieged on several occasions, despite his wounds, rushing across the fire-ravaged terrain to transport wounded Marines to overland. When his captain was seriously wounded, he took command and led his division to Hue City while taking command of the company for three days, commanding attacks against numerous enemy fortified sites while exposing himself to enemy fire to transport the wounded Marines to safety. Kanley was born in Caledonia, Arkansas, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Little Rock, and retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1981 and continues to serve his community and family in the Marines today
