MF DOOM, the mysterious rapper known for incredibly intricate rhyme schemes and his signature mask, has died at the age of 49. The news was first posted on the rapper’s Instagram page by his wife, Jasmine. Richie Abbott, MF DOOM’s agent, confirmed the rapper’s death to Rolling Stone. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed. Abbott confirmed that the rapper, whose real name was Daniel Dumile, was born on Jan.. October of that year died, but his family did not reveal any news of his death until Thursday evening.

Dumiles’ career began when he was a teenager performing under the name Zev Love as part of the hip hop group KMD. After the death of his younger brother DJ Subroc in 1993, Dumile disappeared from public life and reappeared at the Nuyorican Poets’ Cafe in Manhattan in the late 1990s, where he appeared unannounced with a stocking over his face. Concern about anonymity would become a calling card, as Dumile used various means of cunning and above all adorned his signature mask, which was modeled on the Marvel villain Doctor Doom.
After his public resurgence, Dumile recorded six studio albums under various monikers (along with numerous other tracks and beat compilations), leaving a trail of collaborations and inspirations.
