World News – CA – ‘Gremlins 3’ Stays With Dolls Instead Of Using CGI (If It’s Ever Made)

. . If ever it's actually done, director Chris Columbus says Gremlin's 3 effects would stick with puppets instead of using CGI VFX instead.

. .

Fans of Gremlins have long asked about Gremlins 3. In fact, it’s been 25 years since Gremlins 2: The New Batch arrived, and it’s time these little monsters made a comeback. Although there is an animated series for HBO Max, this is a prequel story and fans want something new with the same style as the original. The good news is that if Gremlins 3 is ever made, director Chris Columbus intends to do it with practical puppets rather than computer-generated visual effects.

Chris Columbus made the rounds this week thanks to the release of The Christmas Chronicles 2 on Netflix (and in the Cinemark theaters), and that means he’s had a lot of questions about his previous projects, including his thoughts on the Home Alone restart on Disney and now the potential future of longtime Gremlins 3. The good news is that it sounds like Columbus is still trying to get it going. The director said to Collider:

« I would like to do it. I wrote a script so there is an existing script. We’re working on some rights issues right now so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time is to watch this movie. ”

Technology has come a long way since the days of the original Gremlins movies, and many have feared that Gremlins 3 would ditch the practical puppets that make these movies work so well and the process of being kind of a B-movie along the way -Camp makes the creatures really tangible too. Fortunately, Columbus wants to stay with the dolls:

« I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not as CGI. Maybe you have – you know we had a stop motion scene in the first few Gremlins, but I don’t think I would use much CGI in Gremlins 3. ”

Columbus knows that they would likely need to use CGI to get certain shots or enhance the practical effects, much like the stop-motion shot he is referring to (when a bunch of gremlins march down a city street) , but it’s good to hear that they want the creatures to be made primarily with puppetry.

In August 2017, Columbus teased the script, saying it was “as twisted and dark as anything else. At the time, he said budget issues were at the center of the talks about when the movie might happen. This is certainly even more important now as the coronavirus pandemic has made insurance for film productions much more expensive. But when Gremlins 3 hits the market, fans will be ready and hopefully it will be worth the wait.
